Falmouth Highlight & Shopping Tour

This is a full half day tour. You will be picked up from your hotel or cruise ship approximately 9:00am depending on where you are staying or your port of arrival.

You are transported by air-conditioned mini bus by your professional tour guide/driver who will give you all the information on Jamaica and places of interest along your scenic drive by the Caribbean Sea headed for the old British town of Falmouth which was named by the British hundreds of years ago including the influence of the Spaniards who landed in Jamaica under Christopher Columbus in 1492.

Today Falmouth boasts as their port of call is the third largest natural harbor in the world. The sheltered deep-water anchorage and the recently built landing facilities for tourists arriving to the port by tender have made Falmouth cruise port one of the UK's favorite cruising destinations, newly constructed facilities and officially opened March 2011. Here your adventurous tour becomes really exciting as you will see this magnificent port located in the heart of downtown. You will also see the Falmouth Court House, a magnificent structure no doubt, of Georgian design, which was built in the year 1815. The movie Papillion featuring Dustin Hoffman was filmed here and the court house was a part of the movie.

Time is allowed for you to visit the shopping area for you to choose what you would like to purchase including souvenirs, etc.

You then will visit the Jamaican local food, fruits and general produce market. After this brief visit, the tour continues to one of Jamaica's largest rivers, namely, Martha Brea. This river after hundreds of years flows from the rain forests of Jamaica through the mountains and valleys passing an old Persian water wheel founded in 1799 that has a history of its own. The name, Martha Brae, is a misinterpretation of the Spanish name for the river, the Rio Mateberion. An alternative history of the name is that it comes from the legend of Martha Brae, a Taino witch who was tortured by Spanish settlers until she divulged the location of a stash of gold hidden in a cave along the path of the river. After divulging the location of the gold she changed the course of the river, killing the Spanish and blocking up the cave, where the gold is hidden to this day. Passed on by mouth the legend still lives on.

After all of the above you are now on the way back to your hotel or cruise ship.

Please remember to take your cameras along for picture taking.
