ROARING RIVER, MINERAL SPRINGS & HISTORIC CAVES TOUR
THE ROOTS
A former slave plantation, the Roaring River Estate near Petersfield
in Westmoreland is named for the gushing waters of the river. Its
history is rooted in the sugar industry of the colonial era, beginning
in the late 17th century. It was owned by the Beckfords of Gloucestershire,
one of the first English families to settle in Jamaica after the
island was won from the Spanish.
Mentioned more than once in the famous diaries of Samuel Pepys,
the Beckford family produced the first Custos of Kingston, Peter,
who became one of the island’s wealthiest men and went on
to serve as Lieutenant-Governor of Jamaica. One of his descendants,
an absentee proprietor, was twice elected Lord Mayor of London and
another found fame as an author of Gothic novels.
Roaring
River was one of the properties inherited by William Beckford who
died in London in 1789. He had become deeply indebted following
the devastating hurricane of 1780 as was sent to debtor’s
prison in England where he wrote the historic “Descriptive
account of the island of Jamaica.”
This tour begins with a scenic drive through the countryside into
Roaring River. Enjoy cave tours, nature tours drumming and food
and beverages from our Jamaican restaurant and bar. You will enjoy
taking a bath in one or both of the cave's two healing mineral baths
so remember to bring your swim suites and cameras. Your tour guide
